Get a useful first shortlist

A generator needs a decision to work towards. Describe the customer, the job your business does and the impression the name should make. Add one constraint that would rule out a suggestion. “A modern company” leaves almost everything open; a concrete brief gives you something to judge the results against.

Example: a weekend trip planner

A trip planner for busy couples finding short breaks within two hours of home. Calm and spontaneous, easy to say in English. Avoid names that imply flights or luxury-only holidays.

The audience and travel radius narrow the idea. The tone gives creative direction. The exclusions protect against attractive names that suggest the wrong service. If you dislike the first batch, change the part of the brief that caused the mismatch rather than asking for more of the same.

Compare directions, not just spellings

For that brief, a descriptive direction might emphasise short trips; an evocative direction might suggest a pause or escape. “Near Weekend” and “Small Detour” are illustrative names, not generator outputs or available-domain claims. The first may explain the occasion but sound unusual when spoken. The second suggests discovery but may be mistaken for a navigation feature. Write down the trade-off before deciding which you prefer.

  1. Put each candidate in a sentence a customer would actually say: “We planned it with ___.”
  2. Say it without showing the spelling and ask a willing listener to write it. Record the spelling they use.
  3. Show it next to a one-line description and ask what service they expect. Avoid explaining the intended meaning first.
  4. Keep one reason to choose it and one unresolved question. A shortlist with reasons is more useful than a long list of favourites.

Read the domain result correctly

The basic generator checks .com, .co and .app and shows candidates with a confirmed available result from the check. A missing candidate does not establish why it was omitted: it may have no available match or the check may be inconclusive. An empty batch is not proof that your naming direction is impossible.

Availability describes a moment, not a reservation. Confirm the exact spelling, extension, initial price and renewal terms at your registrar before buying. A domain check does not establish company-name, app-store, social-handle or trade-mark availability. Keep those decisions separate.

Decide what to do next

If none of the names fits, revise the brief. If several fit, stop generating and compare them. If one stands out, investigate its unresolved questions before committing. You can do this in a notebook; a paid score is not required to apply the process.
